What I’m Listening To

I’ve been told I have a broad taste in music. You can judge that for yourself, but regardless here’s what’s coming through my headphones at the moment…

The Grey Land – Joseph C. Phillips Jr., Numinous

Originating in the wake of Michael Brown’s murder, this operatic album is emotionally encapsulating and transparent to the pain the composer feels. Musically, it’s cutting edge and forward thinking–most notably in the wide range of instruments used. Best listening hours are 6:00-12:00

By and By – Caamp

Sometimes you just gotta hop in the car and drive somewhere pretty and quiet. This album may be the perfect music to accompany such an outing. Best listening hours are 5:00-9:00 & 16:00-19:00.

Nu Deco Ensemble – Nu Deco Ensemble

Disclaimer: I used to be an intern for this chamber orchestra. As such, I can attest to the innovation and musical artistry that permeates every level of the organization. I believe that this is the future of classical music, but I implore you to check it out and decide for yourself. Best listening hours are 10:00 – 14:00.

Give Me A Minute – Lizzy McAlpine

For me, this album puts the “folk” in folk music. Something in Lizzy McAlpine’s voice is so stunningly human. It’s music that feels hyper-personal and yet is relatable to the lives of many. Best listening hours are 16:00 – 19:00.

Dark Holler Pop – Mipso

What strikes me about this album is rawness of the recording. The lack of “movie magic”, so to speak, allows the genuinely gifted musicians of this group to display their unfettered talent and ability. I always take care when listening to these songs as they’re likely to get stuck way deep in your head. That said, Mipso never fails to improve a bad mood. Best listening hours are 9:00-15:00

Hilary Hahn plays Bach – Hilary Hahn

There are, without a doubt, certain sounds that cut straight to the heart. The ingenuity of Bach in the hands of Hahn is a combination that surpasses all adjectives. Best listening hours are 22:00-4:00.

Airlines – Alexandre Desplat, National Orchestra of France

Have you ever seen a Wes Anderson movie? If so, then you’ve probably already heard Desplat’s music. He’s composed the scores for Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs, and the French Dispatch. All this to say, a large portion of the Anderson aesthetic can be attributed to Desplat. Best listening hours are 10:00 – 14:00.

18 Months – Calvin Harris

I don’t need to say much about this masterwork from the prince of EDM. Its emotionally transportive and cerebrally electrifying sound speaks for itself. Best listening hours are 12:00 – 24:00
